A modern and astringent ito-suzi bowl

The streaks in this Yamanaka lacquerware are carved into the wood with a potter’s wheel via a technique called, ‘Kashokubiki’; a highly skilled woodturning technique to create lines/patterns in the wood with a knife.
This technique and breathing pattern has been handed down through generations of woodturners. The result is a unique design which relates on the type and shape of wood used. The finish uses the Yamanaka lacquerware specialty of ‘Wiping lacquer’; a technique that does not apply heavy lacquerware – thus allowing you to enjoy the beauty of the wood. The fantastic design of this bowl allows the user to feel at one with nature whilst also being practical – the ‘Kashokubiki’ technique thus makes it hard to slip out of the hands in error.
