1616. Scattered fragments of pottery stone discovered by chance in the mountains of Arita in northwest Kyushu came to be transformed by human intelligence and endeavour into outstandingly beautiful porcelain which has grown to mesmerise the world in the intervening 400 years. Even whilst facing the vagaries of history and the tastes of the age, the spirit of Arita’s people in their pursuit of crafting timeless ceramics has remained unflagging and has been inherited by the current generation sustaining Arita today.
